John D. Stewart, 91, of Elk Point, SD, passed away on January 8, 2010 at a Sioux City hospital after a brief illness.

John married Gloria (Dona) on March 26, 1948, in Beresford, SD. She passed away on May 22, 1996.

John, Johnny, Dad, Grandpa, Poppa...was a man of few words but when he spoke, you would want to listen. He had a dry sense of humor & a big heart. He was born, raised & lived in Elk Point his entire life.

He entered the Army Air Corp & liked to tell stories of his travels; he flew over the Eiffel Tower & rode in the Queen Mary. He was a chief mechanic for B-17's, responsible for getting his airplane repaired and ready to go back into flight after returning from bombing missions.

When he returned from the service, he fell in love and started a family with Dona & the girls. He made a career in farming and did so until approximately 1980. He continued to work for the county for a few more years until full retirement.

He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, cribbage & tinkering. He was very faithful to the South Dakota Lottery and donated weekly.

He & Dona entertained family and friends with endless card games and lots of laughs. On a visit to an Ellsworth Air Force Base open house, he was honored as a former WWII Veteran by being allowed to enter the cockpit of a B1 Bomber. Another life experience was a vacation to Hawaii where he learned to hula. There are many fond memories of this amazing father, grandfather, and great grandfather. Many tears have been shed in laughter & sorrow. He will be greatly missed.
